We've been workin on the Kayak...
After two very busy weekends, first Underwater Hockey Nationals, and then the Lake Pepin Open we were glad to have a weekend to ourselves to work on the Kayak! These are pictures from Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday of last weekend.
First, Felbie built the stands for the strongback...
While I cut and then routed out holes in the forms where the strongback would go through...
The brown piece on top of the white form is the template that we made so that all the holes would be identical...
This is after I got done with all the forms... these are just two of them... I was trying to get done with them before the sun went down and took away my working light... !! :)
Felbie working on the second stand...
This is the last picture from Thursday night... both stands are done, the forms are routed out and the strong back fits nicely into it's stand...
First thing Saturday morning, (with a slight hangover from the Rum party the night before), we got to work... starting with rounding over the edges of the strongback so that the forms (which have rounded corners) will fit on.
Felbie did one side and I did the other...
Then we slid all the forms on the strongback... this was the most satisfying part of the whole weekend... we finally got to see the form of the boat taking shape... this is a picture of the underside of the hull...
Felbie then consulted the book on some things concerning the bow and stern, which we were to attach next...
Here is the last picture of the day Saturday... we slid the bow piece on just to see what it would look like... and we flipped it over... so now it is right side up...
First thing Sunday morning we got started on piecing the bow together... to do this we needed to shave off some of the strong back so that it wouldn't be in the way of the strips, so we flipped it over and sawed it off with my Japanese pull saw (love that saw), then we attached the forms to the bow, and drilled big holes in the bow for clamps that we will need for laminating some pieces together later... and then screwed the bow to the strongback...
Fitting it just so was a bit time consuming....
And so that is pretty much all we got done on Sunday...
